Description |
A cast iron/steel tire upsetter, used to shape tire rims. A long foot pedal on the bottom of the unit raises and lowers curved pieces with crimped edges that fit against similarly crimped plates on the inside lower body. A thick handle/lever below the crimping plates allows the width of the upsetter to be adjusted to fit a larger or smaller tire size. Cast into the tapered plates that form the upper section: A B JARDINE & CO / HESPELER ONT. Some other indistinct cast marks, one diamond shaped. The tire upsetter is bolted to a vertical surface by means of three bolt holes spaced across a backboard piece. |

History |
A.B. Jardine and Company was founded in 1870 by Andrew Bell Jardine (1823-1903). The company was located in Hespeler, Ontario with the factory at what would become 54 Guelph Avenue. Initially, the company specialized in making blacksmith supplies - post drills, drill presses, forge blowers - but later manufactured pipe wrenches, and pipe cutting and threading tools. During the First World War, A.B. Jardine had a military contract to manufacture shell casings. The company ceased operations in the late 1940s. |
