History |
The Shantz Button Manufacturing Company was established in 1871 by Jacob Y. Shantz (1822-1909). The company was variously known as the Dominion Button Works and the Shantz Button Manufacturing Company in the 1870s and 1880s. IN 1891, the business was incorporated as the Jacob Y. Shantz & Son Co. Ltd. The company was purchased by David Gross Jr. (1866-1944) in 1912 and renamed Dominion Button Manufacturers Limited. David was succeeded by his son, Mervin Gross (1896-1971), who introduced the production of plastic buttons in the 1940s. The company closed in 1964 and the factory building on Water Street North in Kitchener was demolished in 1970. |
