History |
David Luckhardt (1853-1916) and his wife, Mary Wilhelm (1861-1948), purchased the house at 159 Jacob Street in New Hamburg, ON in 1903. Their eldest son, Emerson Luckhardt (1889-1982) and his wife, Abigail Otto (1896-1983) then lived in the house. Emerson and Abigail were married in 1916, and they had two daughters. In 1877, Jacob Becker (1835-1906) opened a dry goods store in New Hamburg, ON. Jacob was married to Catharine Weber (1836-1910), and their two sons, Daniel and Herman, worked as clerks in their father's store. Daniel Becker (1857-1925) was married twice - first to Lydia Schulte (1857-1910) from Buffalo, NY, and then to Emma Louise Lachinger (1872-1934) of New Hamburg, ON. Beginning in 1901, Daniel and Herman, in partnership, operated the business and turned it into a department store, offering groceries, furniture, and hardware. Herman died young in 1909, and Daniel purchased his share of the business, running it by himself. Daniel's son, Oliver H. Becker, assumes control of the business after Daniel's passing and operated it until 1946. The business is sold out of the Becker family in 1955. As of 2013, the Becker building is Murray's Clothing and Footwear at 95 Peel Street in New Hamburg. |
