History |
The quilt was made by Ellen Elizabeth (Gerrard) McKay (1864-1932) of Hawkesville, Wellesley Township. Ellen was married to David McKay (1849-1910), and they had four children. According to Nancy Lou Patterson, "this Double Irish Chain contains a central chain or diagonal sequence of square patches, here of a consistent black-figured red, flanked by a pair of matching chains, here in plain orange, placed on a plain white background. The pattern is very densely repeated, with 17 chains crossing in each dimension of the diagonal grid, created by the assembly of 184 blocks, alternating between blocks created by 25 square patches, and 'plain' blocks with four square patches appliqued, on to each corner, all bound in white. The labour involved in hand-sewing this vivid work can only be imagined." |
