Description |
Child's size pair of felt boots. The boots have a black, thick felt sole with brown leather toes. A strip of brown leather also runs the length of the front and back of each boot. There are brown metal grommets through the leather on the front of each boot. The remainder of the boot is made of brown felt. Attached to the left boot is a yellow paper tag. The tag is oval in shape and has "Guaranteed/All Wool Felt/Made of the finest/South African especially imported/Wools/Great West Felts/Can Take It!/A guide to get the greatest satis-/faction and wear./1. Fit a good size rubber on shoe in wet/weather./2. Two pairs of felts, used alternatively,/will prolong the life of shoes./Great West Polar King/The Empire's largest Manufacturers/of First Quality Felt Footwear./The Great West Felt/Company, Limited/Elmira,/Ontario" printed on it in both English and French. The tag is attached through one of the grommet holes with a length of cream coloured cotton string. |

History |
The Great West Felt Company, Limited was founded in 1910 with Oscar H. Vogt (1868-1927) as president. The company manufactured heavy felt footwear under the brand names of Great West and Polar King. In the 1920s, the company was one of the largest employers in Elmira. The factory was located at 20 Arthur Street North, and closed around 1950. |
