Description |
A circular, silver medal with the obverse showing seven marching figures, representing men and women of the army, air force, navy, and nursing service. Around the edge is "1939 CANADA 1945 VOLUNTARY SERVICE VOLONTAIRE". On the reverse is the Canadian Coat of Arms. A straight, non-swivelling suspender is attached by a small metal ring passing through a small fixed ring at the top of the medal. A length of ribbon is attached to the suspender. It is 3.3 cm wide and consists of five stripes: green, red, blue (centre), red, green. A silver bar with a maple leaf in the centre overlays the ribbon. |

History |
The Canadian Volunteer Service medal was established on October 22, 1943 and was awarded to persons of any rank in the Naval, Military or Air Forces of Canada who voluntarily served on Active Service and who completed 18 months service from September 3, 1939 to March 1, 1947. The bar was awarded to those who completed 60 days service outside Canada. 650, 000 medals and 525, 500 bars were issued to Canadians. A paper label with the medal states that it was awarded to Maj. H. Denis-Nathan, E.D. |
