History |
The Berlin Rubber Manufacturing Company was incorporated in May, 1899. The founders included George Schlee, Jacob Kaufman, A.L. Breithaupt, and Louis Weber. The factory was located at 84 Margaret Avenue in Berlin, beside the Grand Trunk Railway. The Berlin Town Council voted in favour of a ten-year exemption on local taxes for the new company. Talmon Henry Rieder was appointed bookkeeper of the new company. In 1903, he and Jacob Kaufman, following a disagreement with the other shareholders, left the company and formed the Merchant's Rubber Company Limited. It was located at 51 Breithaupt Street in Berlin. In 1907, both the Berlin Rubber Company and the Merchant's Rubber Company were acquired by Canada Consolidated Rubber of Montreal. T.H. Rieder became a director of Consolidated Rubber and general manager of all its Canadian footwear factories. This company was later referred to as Dominion Rubber Systems. In 1911, T.H. Rieder was elected vice-president of Consolidated Rubber and influenced the company to locate its first automobile tire factory in Berlin in 1912 - the Dominion Tire factory. |
