Description |
A circular, silver medal with the obverse showing the bareheaded coin effigy of King George VI, left facing, and "GEORGEIVS VI D: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP:". The reverse shows the Royal Crown on the stump of an oak tree, flanked by a lion and a lioness. At the top left is 1939 and at the top right 1945. "THE DEFENCE MEDAL" is written below. The medal is attached to a plain, straight, non-swivelling suspender with a single-toe claw. A length of ribbon is attached to the suspender. It is 3.2 cm wide and consists of seven stripes: green, black, green, orange (centre), green, black, green. The orange represents the enemy attacks on the green land of England and the black represents the black-outs. |

History |
The Defence Medal was authorized on August 16, 1945. It was issued to Canadians for six months service in Britain between September 3, 1939 and May 8, 1945. 325, 000 of these medals were issued to Canadians. A paper label with the medal states that it was issued to Maj. H. Denis-Nathan, E.D. |
