History |
The Fraktur tradition originated in Medieval Europe. This style of calligraphy has carried down through the centuries. It attained its most exuberant forms of expression among the Germanic communities of North America in the 1700s and 1800s. Fraktur includes both the calligraphic and pictorial elements. In many cases the writing had been relegated to a lesser position and the decorative elements highlighted. "Fraktur" refers to the broken style of calligraphic writing. The Pennsylvania-German decorative styles most common are birds, tulips, and elements from nature. Most Fraktur of the Pennsylvania-Germans can be found in Vorschriften (writing exercises), Belohnungen (rewards of merit), family registers, prayers and book plates. The decorative style is usually used to embellish these works. |
