Description |
Cardboard matchbook cover. Dark blue background with the Union Jack on the front cover. Line drawing of an English bulldog dressed in a sailor's outfit in the centre of the flag. Printed along the lower edge is "Close Cover Before Striking". On the spine is a small circle with "Excise Tax Paid 1/3" printed in it. In the centre of the back cover is a red diamond with "Diamond Grit/Abrasives" printed in it. Printed above the diamond is "The Grit that Counts" and below is "Cut Faster - Last Longer/And Save You Money/Made by/Canada Sand Papers Limited/Preston, Canada". Printed along the lower edge is "Strike Rite Matches, Ltd/London, Ont.". Printed on the interior of the cover is a line drawing of a man with a speech balloon to the left. Printed in the balloon is "Diamond Grit/Improved Process/Papers/Cut Your/Sanding/Costs/Way Down". Printed below is the Canada Sand Paper logo. The matches have been removed from the interior and the striking surface has been removed from the back cover. |

History |
Canada Sand Papers Limited began in 1931 and was owned by Percy R. Hilborn (1886-1972). The factory was originally located in the former Baird Brothers Furniture plant in Plattsville, ON. As demand for the products increased, a number of additions were made to the factory. The company exported sand paper to Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Mexico, and Cuba. In 1950, the company was bought by Carborundum Abrasives. The company was sold in 1985 to the Norton Company and again in 1990 to Saint-Gobainn Corporation. Saint-Gobainn Abrasives is still in operation in Plattsville as of 2012. Strike Rite Matches Limited was formed in 1939 in London, ON. The company was sold in 1959 to Maryland Match Company but continued operations until the original name. The company closed in 1988. |
