History |
In 1877, Jacob Becker started a general store in New Hamburg, ON. By 1891, Jacob's sons, Daniel and Herman, who had worked for their father as clerks, took over the management of the business. The brothers expanded the store, selling a variety of groceries, hardware, and furniture. In 1901, they expanded the business and added an addition to their building. Herman died in 1909 at 37 years of age, and Daniel continued to operate the business. Daniel passed away in 1925 and his son, Oliver, continued to run the business until health problems forced him to retire in 1946. Oliver's wife, Hazel, and their son Robert continued to manage the store until 1955 when they sold the business. |
