Description |
Copper pan lamp with a hinged cover. The lamp body is water drop-shaped with rounded sides. The front part of the cover is hinged while the back part is rivetted to the body. A separate copper wick holder is attached to the interior of the lamp and protrudes out from the front of the cover. A curved length of metal with an attached hook is attached to the back part of the cover. Stamped twice into the curved metal is "V. Straube". |

History |
Valentine Straube (1825-1903) was a tinsmith and locksmith in the Village of Waterloo in the 1860s and 1870s. According to the 1901 census, he and his wife, Katarina/Katherine Grzeczkowska (1831-1918) emigrated from Prussia to Canada around 1854. This census also listed them as being Polish, while earlier census listed them as German. They are Roman Catholic. They moved to Hibbert Township, Perth County in the late 1870s or early 1880s, and then to Manitoba by 1901. |
