Description |
Wooden cane carved from single piece of wood with a curved handle. Elaborately carved diamonds in the centre with carved cross-hatching. Carved elements have been painted. Painted, wooden figure within the cane that moves vertically. There is a series of Xs carved into the edge of the end of the handle. The lower half of the cane is carved to resemble knots. The cane ends in a rubber foot embossed with "18" and wrapped with black, electrical tape. |

History |
According to the donor, the cane belonged to John Metz Schneider (1859-1942). The cane was passed on to his son, Norman Schneider (1888-1985), who gave it to his cousin, Alfred Schneider Gofton (1889-1985). Alfred's mother, Elizabeth (Schneider) Gofton (1862-1894) was J.M.'s sister. |
