History |
The Kitchener Winery was owned by Bruno J. Huehnergard (1887-1957), and was in operation from around 1935 to the mid-1940s. Bruno was the son of Martin Huehnergard (1863-1931) and Elizabeth Fey (1858-?). He married Cordelia Alles (1888-1971), daughter of George Alles (1856-1934) and Elizabeth Fischer (1860-1906) in 1909. According to city directories, the retail store was located at 60 Queen Street South in Kitchener, ON. The manufacturer's mark indicates the bottle was made by the Dominion Glass Company. Dominion Glass was a major Canadian glassmaker with product lines ranging from bottles and jars to pressed tableware and art glass. It was a corporation that grew through multiple takeovers of smaller firms and had factories spread throughout Canada. The original company was Foster Brothers Glass Works, established in 1855 in Quebec. The company was renamed the Diamond Glass Company Limited in 1890; the Diamond Flint Glass Company Limited in 1903; and Dominion Glass Company Limited in 1913. The name was changed to Domglas Limited in 1976, and in 1989 it was acquired by Consumers Packaging. Consumers Packaging declared bankruptcy in 2002. |
