Description |
A circular, silver medal with the obverse showing the crowned coinage effigy of King George VI, left facing, with "GEORGIVS VI D: BR: OMN: REX ET INDIAE IMP:" around the edge. The reverse shows a lion standing on the body of a double-headed dragon. The dragons heads are those of an eagle and a dragon, representing German and Japanese enemies. The dates 1939 and 1945 are at the top, just right of centre. The medal is attached to a plain, straight, non-swivelling suspender with a single-toe claw. A length of ribbon is attached to the suspender. It is 3.2 cm wide and consists of seven stripes: red, blue, white, red (centre), white, blue, red. A single bronze oak leaf emblem is pinned to the ribbon. |

History |
The 1939-1945 War Medal was authorized on August 16, 1945 and was awarded to all full-time personnel of the armed forces and merchant marines for serving for 28 days between September 3, 1939 and September 2, 1945. The oak leaf emblem is worn to signify a Mention-in-Despatches. 700, 000 were issued. A paper label with the medal states that it was issued to Maj. H. Denis-Nathan, E.D. |
