Description |
Stoneware pottery jug. The sides of the jug taper in toward the mouth, resembling an upside down funnel. There is a small handle attached from the mouth of the jug to where the sides begin to taper. The jug has a light beige glaze but the bottom is not glazed. There are two light blue stripes with a white stripe in between along the upper and lower sections of the jug. Black lettering on the front of the jug reads "Bernhardt/And/Ziegler/Berlin, Ont.". No maker's mark. |

History |
Bernhardt and Ziegler Wine and Liquor Merchants was started by William George Bernhardt (1869-1924) and George Ziegler (1862-1936). In the 1912 city directory, the business is located at 116-118 King Street West in Berlin, and in the 1915 directory it is listed at 120 King Street West. The business appears to only be in operation from around 1910 to 1915. George Ziegler is listed as a manager at the L. Kuntz Park Brewery in city directories before 1909 and after 1915. William George Bernhardt appears to have been a liquor dealer in Galt, ON previously. |
