Description |
This has a flat unfinished wooden base. Mounted on that is a metal structure with 3 legs and a flat oval top, with a bit of a rim. On top is a small wire cage around an element which would heat up when plugged in by the attached 2-prong, 2-ply cord. Stamped on the metal is `M.A. Cuming Co. Ltd. V. 110, Amp. 5.5 H.E.P.C. Appro. No. 1503''. This would be used to stretch and shrink hats by placing the hat on a hollow metal form, which would go over the element and be heated. |

History |
According to the donor, Hanka (Henrietta) Braun worked as a milliner in Europe, including Paris, before moving to Kitchener in the 1940's. She and her husband Joseph lived on Karn St. for a time. Hanka worked for Miss Elizabeth E. Berlet's Exclusive Millinery (17 Queen St. S.), and for Miss Eva Wesley at Wesley Millinery (26 Queen St. N.). She then opened Henriette's Hats, sometime between 1945 and 1956. Her shop was situated at 123 1/2 Frederick St., and later at 74 Queen St. S. All three milliners closed by 1970. |
