Description |
Canadian Nursing Sister's uniform has a jacket and skirt: a) jacket is made of grey/blue (faded) cotton. It is hip length, with a double breasted opening in the front with five buttons on the left side and five eyelet holes to take the shank of metal buttons (missing) and two snap fasteners, a round neck, and long sleeves. The neck is finished with a narrow band. The front and back of the jacket is gathered at the waist to a wide band to sit over the hips. There are two hooks in the back at the waist to hook on to cotton loops on the back of the skirt. There is a small pocket in the front just below the right shoulder. The sleeves which have two panels, are gathered at the armhole and fitted to the wrist. There are shoulder tabs but no badges. Inside the front neckband is printed in black ink "BOWMAN". b) wide cape collar is a fine grey cotton and faced on the outside with wide bands of red cotton. The collar is fitted to sit over the jacket and has shoulder seams and a short seam over the top of the armhole. The neck is round and finished with a bias facing. In the centre of the bottom edge of the back of the collar, is a short opening the width of the red band with a red rosette attached to the edge. There is a hook and eye closure at the neck. The cape is not from a Canadian uniform but probably from when Maude served with Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service. c) skirt is made of grey/blue (faded) cotton. It is ankle length and has four panels and a narrow waist band. The front panel has a flap just below the waist in each of the side seams with a pocket beneath. The left flap lies over the side opening that three snap fasteners and a hook and eye. The back panel has four pleats which are sewn down to about the hips. There are two cotton loops on the back of the waistband to hold the hooks in the back of the jacket. Inside the waistband in black ink is printed "BOWMAN". |
