History |
The YMCA Iron Duke was a mobile canteen that delivered hot meals and tea to bombed out civilians and military personnel during the London Blitz. Beginning on September 7, 1940, London was bombed by the Luftwaffe for 57 consecutive nights. More than 40,000 civilians were killed during that time. The Iron Duke became a symbol as it survived 30 bombings, and it was brought to North America on a fundraising tour in 1941. Funds raised in Canada supported the Queen's Canadian Fund for Air Raid Victims. Vials, such as this one, containing rubble from the Blitz were sold from the canteen. The canteen also contained an exhibit of war relics. |
