History |
Harland Sanders (1890-1980) opened a restaurant in 1930 in Corbin, Kentucky. The specialty of the restaurant was fried chicken, and it was so notable that in 1935 Sanders was named a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Ruby Laffoon. After closing the restaurant in 1952, Sanders worked on franchising his chicken business. By 1964, he had more than 600 franchised outlets and in 1966, Kentucky Fried Chicken went public. Colonel Sanders continued to the spokesman for the chain until he passed away. As of 2010, Kentucky Fried Chicken is still in business, with franchised stores throughout the world. The media event is most likely the opening of the first KFC franchise in Kitchener. Barney Strassburger Sr. had an agreement with Colonel Sanders that he could sell Kentucky Fried Chicken from his pre-existing restaurant called the Twins Drive-In Restaurant in 1960. It was so named because Barney had two sets of twins, and was located somewhere on Highway 7. The restaurant was also serviced by car hops. By the early 1970s, the KFC portion moved to 1157 Weber Street East in Kitchener and was called the Twins Kentucky Fried Chicken. The Twins restaurant continued on at 171 Highland Road East, and it too would later become a KFC outlet. These were the two oldest KFC restaurants in the area and they both were closed in 2012. The Strassburger family continues to own local KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut franchises under the TwinCorp Inc. corporate name. |
