History |
The Chicopee Ski Club was established in 1934 by a group of local businessmen known as the "Dutch Companee". Original members of the companee included Jake Baetz, Dr. H.M. Lackner, J.A. Martin, Albert Butler, Fred Schneider, Norman Schneider, Jack Halliwell, and Clare Duffus. During its first season, the ski club attracted 200 members. The location of the ski club was the Lewis and Janowski properties on King Street East near Morrison Road in Kitchener, ON. The club rented the site which included both downhill slopes and bush trails. In the 1940s and 1950s, the club continued to expand its facilities, including rope tows, a Ski Patrol, a Ski School, and a new chalet. In 1962 the Cities of Kitchener and Waterloo purchased the Janowski property and donated it to the Grand Valley Conservation Authority. By 1968 the Grand River Conservation Authority owned 140 acres of conservation parkland including the entire Chicopee Hill. The ski club entered into a ten-year agreement with the GRCA for use of the land. Membership grew during the 1970s and 1980s, and in 1972, the first chair lift was opened at Chicopee. During this time, Chicopee also became open year round with horseshoes and tennis being offered in the summer. Management of Chicopee also changed during this time with professionals being hired to run the club like a business. As of 2012, Chicopee Ski Club is still in operation offering recreational programs year round. |
