History |
William Geiger Jr. (1923-1981) was a son of Dr. William Geiger (1882-1953) and Grace Martin (1893-1981) of Waterloo, Ontario. As a youth, William took great interest in radios and spent much of his time at Kitchener's CKCR radio station. As time passed, his knowledge increased and he became quite an authority in the field of radio. When CKCR changed to new equipment, the original became available and William acquired it for his own interest. As an adult, William worked as an electrician and continued to be interested in radio. The CKCR radio station began in Brantford, Ontario in the mid-1920s. Owner, John Patterson, had difficulty raising interest and, in 1929, accepted an offer to move the station to Kitchener. Principal investors in the station were funeral director Art Sandrock, Clyde Mitchell, Gib Liddle, and C.F. Thiele of the Waterloo Musical Society band. The station was initially located in the former Waterloo Musical Society band practice rooms on the third floor of the Weichel Hardware building at 24 King Street South in Waterloo. The station officially went on air on July 20, 1929. The station moved to the Walper Hotel around 1932 and then to new studios at the corner of King and Ontario Streets in 1936. Following the Second World War, the station moved to the Arcade Building at 125 King Street West. In the 1960s, CKCR became CHYM-AM and, as of 2022, is now 570 News with the station broadcasting from the Boardwalk in Waterloo. |
