Frank Steeb Working at Kaufman Rubber |
Description |
Black and white photograph with a white border. There is a young man standing in the middle of the photograph, looking directly at the photographer. He is wearing a dress shirt, vest and tie with a white apron. He is standing behind a workbench and is holding a boot last in his hand. He is possibly repairing the last or preparing it for moulding. There are numerous lasts on metal holders on either side of him and in the background. There appears to be pieces of sandpaper, some hand tools, and an oil can on the workbench in front of the man. The year "1929" is printed in blue ink on the lower edge of the border. Printed on the reverse in pencil is "Frank Steeb at/work at Kaufman's". No photographer's mark. |

History |
Frank Steeb (1908-1971) was born in Strasbourg, Alsace Lorraine but grew up in Germany. He was the son of Karl Heinrich Steeb and Hermine Wagner. In 1927, Frank immigrated to Canada on board the Montnairn arriving at Saint John, NB. An uncle had immigrated the previous year and settled near Drumbo. Frank initially worked at the same farm as his uncle but found work at Kaufman Rubber as a patternmaker and moved to Kitchener. Frank had trained as a plasterer in Germany, and during the Depression he took odd jobs painting or wallpapering to help augment the family income. By the early 1940s, Frank stopped working at Kaufmans and operated his own painting and decorating business. He married Katharine Seidl (1912-2001) from Romania, and together they had four children. |
