Dressed in a blue golf shirt and blue jeans. Walter Ostanek is standing to his left, holding a microphone. He is wearing black pants, a white shirt, and a black vest with a colourful border. To his left is the musical group. Two unidentified men and two unidentified women seated, playing various instruments. The men are wearing black pants and vests, white shirts, and red ties. The women are wearing traditional German costumes. Hillside with evergreens in the background. Wooden fence directly behind the group. The photograph is date stamped in the lower right corner "87 9 2". Printed on the reverse in a repeating pattern "Fujicolor Paper". No photographer's mark. |

History |
This photograph was taken in Germany and Austria in 1987. The CKCO-TV/CTV crew were there to film a one hour television special featuring Walter Ostanek. John Arajs (1943-2009) was a news photographer and cameraman at CKCO-TV for 42 years. Walter Ostanek (1935 - ) was born in Duparquet, Quebec and is of Slovenian heritage. His family moved to St. Catharines, ON when he was four. Walter began playing the accordion at age 9, and in 1957 he formed his own band, the Walter Ostanek Band. He specializes in polka music. Walter has been nominated for 21 Grammy awards, has a star on the Canada Walk of Fame (2001), and has given 30 consecutive years of performances at Kitchener's Oktoberfest. From 1975 to 1989, Walter hosted "Polka Time" on CKCO-TV. He has also done numerous radio and television specials and performances. Walter also owns Walter Ostanek Music Centre Ltd in St. Catharines, ON. |
