Black and white photograph with white border. The photograph is of an unidentified woman and boy beside a pond or stream. The boy is wearing a sailor's suit, and is playing with a stick like it is a sword. He is crouched and looking directly at the camera. The woman is seated behind him, looking over her shoulder at the camera. She is wearing a white blouse and skirt, and has her hair pulled back. There is a blanket on the ground to the left. Pond or stream in the centre of the photograph with farm buildings and a rail fence in the background. The photograph may have been taken at the Grenzebach farm near Hickson, Ontario. The reverse is blank. |

Photograph is attributed to Ida Grenzebach (1890-1967), a daughter of William Grenzebach (1858-?) and Emma Wegenast (1863-?) of Hickson, Oxford County. When Ida was a young woman she went to live with her aunt, Laura/Louise Wegenast (1865-1919) and her husband in Wellesley, ON. Laura/Louise was married to Henry Forler (1870-1931) had a shoe store in the village. They had no children but Henry's parents lived with them. Ida most likely helped with the housework and may have helped in the store. The store Henry rented in Wellesley was moved to Doon Heritage Village in 1969, and is currently interpreted as the Post Office/Tailor Shop. Ida married Henry in 1927. What happened to Ida after Henry's death is unknown. Both Ida and Henry are buried in Waterloo's Mount Hope Cemetery. |
