History |
Arthur Russell Goudie (1884-1960) was a son of Isaac Goudie (1853-1949) and Susannah Witmer (1855-1930) of Waterloo Township. In 1909, Arthur married Alice Weseloh (1884-1941), a daughter of August Weseloh (1859-1919) and Catherine Cook (1856-1929) of Berlin/Kitchener. That same year Arthur also became a partner in his father-in-law's dry goods and clothing business, Weseloh and Company on King Street East. In 1918, a fire destroyed a large portion of the building. Arthur rebuilt and renamed the business Goudies Limited. It would become one of the largest family-owned department stores in Ontario. The store was expanded over the years, and eventually became an L-shaped, multi-level store at the corner of King and Queen Streets. The store closed in 1988. In 2003, the building became the home of the Waterloo Regional Children's Museum, known as THEMUSEUM as of 2017. |
