History |
CKCO-TV began broadcasting March 1, 1954 from a transmitter located on Baden Hill in Wilmot Township. The call letters stood for Canada, Kitchener, Central Ontario. The station was an affiliate of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) until 1964, when it became affiliated with CTV. The station was originally owned by Central Ontario Television Limited, a consortium that included Famous Players and Carl A. Pollock. Electrohome acquired controlling shares of CKCO in 1970, when Canadian broadcasting laws required domestic ownership of stations. In 1980, Central Ontario Television Limited amalgamated with parent company Electrohome. The new division was called CAP Communications Limited after founder, Carl A. Pollock. As of 2011, the station is owned by BellMedia and no longer uses its call letters. It is instead referred to as CTV News Kitchener. Ric Waurechen was a local artist who also worked in the art department at CKCO-TV. He was also responsible for creating the character Onkel Hans for Oktoberfest celebrations in 1974. |
